One mistake that some martial art school owners make is to concentrate solely on marketing to new customers, and neglecting that pot of gold which is existing customers.

Marketing to your existing customers can be much more profitable and is easier than trying to get new people through the door. Your existing customers are already taking your classes. They perceive you as an expert and they enjoy what it is that you offer.

More importantly you have gone-one of the most difficult problems that any small-business owner has. You have gotten them to spend money on what you’re selling.

Finally, you have easy access to your existing customer base. You can talk to them in class, send an email updates and generally easy to explain what’s going on with your business.

There are numerous different ways that you can ruin an additional revenue from your existing students.

But before you begin lets address a little mindset issue that some martial art business owners have about making more money from their existing students.

Some martial art business owners have concerns about selling to their existing students. The concern is that they will turn their school into a McDojo.

This can limit their ability to earn the income that the desire from the school. But, you can’t provide additional help to your students if your aren’t being paid for your time -unless you are already a millionaire!

So by not providing this additional help you actually short changing your students that could benefit from the extra tuition. Remember, your students are paid for whatever work they do to pay for your lessons. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be paid as well when you are providing value.

Value for Existing Customers

So what kind of additional permission are we talking about.

  • Workshop classes are generally one of the most effective. These can be classes in a specific subject or help in preparing students for grading.
  • Other examples could be summer classes for younger students. And of course you can also charge when students for grading itself.
  • If you can increase the average amount that your students spend each year you’ll find that your school quickly becomes significantly more profitable.

 

The Problems Associated With New Students

Compare this with new students that have never taken a single lesson with you.

  • Firstly, they may not even be sure whether that martial art that you are teaching is the right one for them.
  • Secondly, there may not be sure whether they can be comfortable with your teaching style or the classroom.
  • Thirdly, new customers are going to be more difficult to get in contact with and will have a cost associated with marketing to them.

Essentially with new customers you have to spend money to get in contact with them and then you need clearly show that you provide value in excess of what they will pay to take your class.

So does this mean that you should never market to new people? Of course not, failing to produce a steady stream of new customers through the door is a recipe for disaster.

But, what it does mean is that you should not neglect your existing customers when thinking about your marketing strategy for your school. Make sure that up selling and cross selling your existing students is a part of your marketing strategy for making more money for your martial arts school.
